Just how do you spend your waking hours?
Everyone has 168 hours weekly. How you spend these hours will determine how successful you are. The Magic Trio identifies success as how much of your life you enjoy. Thus, individuals who spend more of their waking hours enjoying life are considered the most successful. Until you have financial independence, your definition of work life balance should go something similar to 40-10-10-50 (hours). I’ll clarify further. 58 hours per week must be devoted to sleeping and personal hygiene. That leaves 110 hours a week for you to spend your time. If you happen to be working 50 hours a week at a career you despise, you’re spending just about 50% of your waking hours not taking pleasure in your life. If this is actually the case, you are not successful. If you are financially independent, you could possibly only spend 10 hours a week or fewer overseeing your work-independent income channels. Presuming you’re also physically fit, you are likely enjoying 90% to 100% of your life.
So many people are not at 90%.
If you’re not there yet, you should take measures to get there. This means making time to improve your life whilst keeping up with your present responsibilities. As you will notice, time management becomes a critical ability to acquire. Time management is key to enjoying life full-time mainly because if you aren’t capable of making time to take consistent action, enjoying life full-time will always be a fantasy that’s unrealistic. After reading this book, you will learn ways to operate efficiently so that these consistent action steps won’t take up a significant amount of time, however you will still need to make some time. How should you spend your waking hours? The Magic Trio work life balance definition starts at 40-10-10-50, but when you do it right, it will end up at 0-10-10-90. Next, I’ll offer you a theoretical breakdown of how I would do things, assuming you are an adult with a full-time job that supports your current lifestyle.
Weekly time: 168 hours.
You need to be sleeping no less than seven hours each day. Sleep is a very underrated aspect of a healthy and happy lifestyle. If you happen to be one of those individuals who says “I’ll sleep when I’m dead”, you may be sleeping much earlier than you’d want. Commit a minimum of seven hours nightly to good quality sleep. You will not be capable of this each night, but if you don’t get enough one night, then attempt to compensate for it the following day. This sounds odd, but make sleep a goal similar to whatever else you wish to accomplish. I target 50 hours a week. Believe me, your body will appreciate it and you’ll have more energy throughout the remaining hours of the week which you will require if you’re going to be serious about taking advantage of this time. Allocate a bit over eight hours a day to sleep and personal hygiene, or 58 hours per week. After this, the actual 110 hours begins.
Beginning time: 110 hours.
You might be spending a minimum of 50 hours per week on your full-time occupation. What if you only work 40 hours per week? Chances are you are still investing at least 50 hours weekly on your job. I’m not only talking about the time you may spend in the office. I’m including the time spent driving, the time spent getting dressed for work, time spent thinking about work away from work, and the time you spend decompressing from work. Eradicate your work and all of this time is freed up. If you like your career, then well done. You have taken care of the largest chunk of time that keeps many people from enjoying their lives and you’re already on your way to enjoying life full-time. You may even already be there. Skip to the next section. If not, then continue reading. Here is the first piece of the new 40-10-10-50 work life balance definition.
Lessen time you spend doing all of these job-related actions. Move closer to work. Bargain a work-from-home or part-time arrangement. I’m not recommending you let up. I’m suggesting the opposite: that you get more productive at your work so you can get more jobs done in less time and free up time for you to do other activities that improve and enhance your life. I understand a lot of people work at least 40 hours per week. In my opinion, 40 hours is the maximum length of time you ought to spend on all job-related activities. If you can get away with 30, then choose 30. If you don’t enjoy what you do, then your aspiration should be to get down to 40 at the most if you’re not there currently. Everyone must generate income somehow and not everyone is able to get it done with WII right from the start. Suck it up and work hard bearing in mind that it’s a temporary position to endure before you realize the opportunity to get to the number you really want, which happens to be zero.
Remaining time: 70 hours.
Now that we’ve gotten the drudgery out of the way, to the exciting stuff. Allocate 10 hours weekly to improving or maintaining your physical fitness. Allocate two to three hours per week to preparing nutritious meals. Once you learn how to cook efficiently, you shouldn’t need much more time than this. If you’ve got a spouse to do this for you, that’s better still. Set aside five hours a week to formal exercise. I like to spend one hour a day each weekday and take the weekends off. The one hour includes time to recover. Once you learn to exercise efficiently, a 30 to 45 minute session ought to be plenty. In the Physical Fitness section, I introduced you to a monster set of workouts that can be done in only 10 minutes when you’re really tight on time. Allot two or three hours per week to casual exercise. Join a athletics league, go mountain climbing, go hiking, whatever. There are psychological and physical benefits to this.
Leftover time: 60 hours.
Next, set aside 10 hours each week to producing work-independent income (WII). As I mentioned in the previous section, WII is either making passive income or making active income working at something you adore. Passive income may be dependent on building your capital and that, as you’ve read, needs to be a fully automated process so you shouldn’t have to devote any time on that after initial setup. Thus, the 10 hours a week needs to be used on educating yourself on ways to earn passive income (i.e. property investing, stock trading, etc.) or on identifying solutions to earn an active full-time income doing something you’re keen on. In other words, spend the 10 hours learning a skill or trade that you enjoy and you can eventually turn into a full-time income rather then spending the 10 hours taking up a second job that you like but that could by no means generate a full-time income.
Remaining time: 50 hours.
Exactly how much enjoyment does your existing work life balance definition give you? The Magic Trio offers you a minimum of 50 hours. With the 50 hours, simply enjoy your life. Spend more hours with your loved ones and friends. Take up a new interest or spend more time on your existing ones. Give yourself a taste of what it’s like to live it up full-time. This will do a couple of things. First, it will help get you through the time you might have to temporarily spend doing things you don’t enjoy. Next, it will motivate you to start enjoying life full-time as soon as possible and reinforce the behaviors you cultivate to help you get there. Don’t get too carried away here. Remember, enjoying life is important, but you want to avoid things that will cause you to self-destruct or cause significant barriers in your progress. For instance, DO go out for a couple drinks with your pals once or twice a week. DON’T turn into an alcoholic or drug abuser. DO treat yourself to a little shopping. DON’T go blow $10,000 on a new wardrobe. Get the concept?
